Detoxifying Yellow Split Pea Trinidadian Dhal

Ingredients

7 cups of water

2 cups split peas (yellow)

4 cloves garlic

salt to taste (about 3/4 teaspoon)

3/4 teaspoon Turmeric

2-3 tablespoon oil

1/2 small onion sliced thin

1 cup of cilantro (or more if you fancy it)

1/4 hot pepper (habanero, scotch bonnet, or whatever hot pepper you like), optional

salt to taste

fresh ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Rinse and soak rinse split peas. Drain until water is clear and transparent.

  2. Pour the water into a big pot. Once the water is boiling, add the split peas, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and turmeric into the water.

  3. Reduce to a very gentle simmer and place a lid on the pot (a bit ajar). Allow this to cook on low for ~45mins.

  4. Midway, add fresh cilantro into the pot.

  5. Once the peas are soft and tender, blend it all together. You can use a hand emulsifier or blender for this.

  6. Taste for salt.

  7. In a separate pan, heat 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil and some garlic. Wait until the garlic gets crispy but not quite burnt and then pour into the pot of dhal.

  8. Add the rest of the cilantro and a fresh spinach or green as a topping.

  9. Hope you enjoy!
